A few posts ago, Karla talked about the galaxy trend. Surprisingly this trend has not died down! That is great news, because i’m still loving it. This time I wanted to experiment with men’s fashion and the transition to the cooler months. Since there is a huge emphasis on woman’s wear for summer to fall, i wanted to dedicate a post to the men out there who want to be a little more trendy, a littler more daring, and like us, enjoy clothes!
One of the things I have been noticing for this fall are the army style outerwear and of course the green utility style jackets/ parkas. I believe this is a staple for any girl’s wardrobe. It’s also a great transition piece towards the fall. It’s an easy piece to style that is also very versatile.
This trend is probably a little out dated but i’m still obsessing over it. I think this is the perfect shoe for a laid back kind of style with a touch of femininity. You can dress it up with a dress or dress it down with jeans. You don’t have to look boyish wearing sneakers you can still look cute! Hope you found a little piece of inspiration with these sets I’ve created :)
In the following picture I paired it with a form fitting dress, denim vest, club master ray bans, a maroon beenie, and a black clutch.
The following is an even more casual look. I paired the shoes up with a printed sweater and leather leggings. For accessories i wanted to keep it simple, so it doesn’t take away from the printed top and the clutch.
On March 21st, the Red Bull Music Academy and the Winter Music Conference held an event at The Stage in the Miami Design District featuring Teebs, Lunice, and TOKiMONSTA!
It was an amazing experience to say the least. My friends and I had never been to The Stage before, so our minds were blown! The ambience was so chill! Indoors, there were couches and lounge areas that you could have your drinks at. On the opposite side of “the stage” (where the DJ booth was set up) was an open patio - with a food truck parked! The patio was a large area and there were plenty of seats outside too. So if you’re looking for a chill, yet classy place in Miami to go with your friends, The Stage is where it’s at!
When we arrived, DJ A-train was on the stage playing his set. Great stuff!
Then Teebs went on with his eclectic and soulful set. I seriously fell in love with his music at that moment.
Lunice went up next… and my friends and I lost it! His hard-hitting beats mixed with rap hooks were CRAZY. We couldn’t help but dance! AND he’s half-Filipino!
Last, but definitely not least, was the one and only TOKiMONSTA! This girl is so sick. I mean, who else opens their shows with “Let’s see how deep, and dark, and scary we can get.” ? And let me tell you, it was all that and MORE.
I am so happy that I found out about this show and that I didn’t miss out on such amazing music! Definitely looking forward to WMC next year and looking forward to who they bring out! Here are some other pics of Joanna, Steven, and I meeting them. :D
Last Thursday, February 2, 2012, was the opening night for our friend Spen’s (a.k.a. Spen1) exhibit at the Kidrobot store in Miami Beach!
There were a lot of people in attendance, all of whom were taken by Spen’s art. Ranging from canvas to merch and even vinyl dolls, Spen displayed that his roots as a street artist doesn’t limit his talent. With his emphasis on creating unique characters with different personalities, there is no question as to why Kidrobot invited him for a show.

Spen currently works as a graphic designer with the label Biggest & Baddest and also works with The Bboy Spot. While he is largely known around the hip-hop community, there is no doubt his name will spread world wide! Keep an eye out for him and his art!
One of my favorite fashion accessory all year round and especially this spring has got to be sunglasses. They not only protect your eyes from the sun, premature wrinkles (like we got to worry about that) or hide the fact that you just woke up, but they can complete your look. Fun sunglasses that I have been loving lately are the Cat Eye and prints. Check these ones out!
American Apparel: Convertible Sunglasses- $45
Top Shop: White Plastic Oversize Saucer Shape -$32
Asos: Metal Half Frame Cat Eye- $26.86
I got these sunny’s on sale at Saks Fifth Avenue for $75 plus 30% off, pretty good deal I would say!
What kind of sunglasses are you sporting? Let us know!
One of the biggest trends right now is LAYERING JEWELRY. And not just necklaces, but bracelets and rings as well! I’m still learning how to pair jewelry with outfits. I’m a minimalist kind of girl when it comes to jewelry, so I never really played around with it.
I have come to learn, however, that the right jewelry can dress up any outfit and add that hint of femininity to a drab outfit (because let’s face it, we all have those days when we just want to be in a t-shirt and jeans). So I tried the layering style with my lazy outfit today and I have to say, it did make it look more… interesting.
- Rhinestone Lips - A gift from @bellehboi!
- Long chain with misc. charms - A gift from @aaayotiffany!
- Owl - Love Culture
- Silver bar - Forever 21
- Gold wings - Bought from a Chinese store…
When layering jewelry, don’t be afraid to mix metals! Silver, gold, brass - wear them all together!
For necklaces, mix lengths and styles. Wear short chains with long chains, or different chains with a choker. Get creative!
Same thing goes for rings; wear big bold pieces with small bands and mix different metals. When I think of layering rings, I think of Phoebe Buffay from FRIENDS.
Yeah… you all remember her.
NOTE ABOUT MY RINGS: I love wearing rings now, but I don’t have a big collection. I usually wear some of my mom’s, but she wears slightly bigger sizes, so it’s always difficult mixing them up. I WOULD buy my own rings (and a TON of them), but the only styles that are in my price range are like Forever 21… and I’ve had issues with their rings. Yeah, A LOT of them are cute and INCREDIBLY affordable, but believe me when I say you get what you’re paying for. I once bought a two-finger ring that broke in half. That silver bar one I’m wearing in the picture is actually turning brass and almost every ring I’ve ever bought from them turns my fingers green. So in short, I’m picky about my rings. And I’ve yet to find an affordable place whose products won’t stain my fingers -_-
My bracelets are severely lacking. I plan on making my own since I’ve found some super cool DIY stuff online! I’ll share once I’ve actually done it! :D
So if anyone follows my private Tumblr (RiceCakeNinja), I posted a sneak peak to my ‘Outfit of the Day’. Well, just a picture of my hair, really. But it’s supposed to compliment my outfit. Anyway, ENOUGH TALKING!
I call this…
MY GRUNGE OUTFIT OF THE DAY! Haha~
- Red plaid flannel - Ralph Lauren
- White cropped tank - Cotton On
- Triangle necklace - Cotton On
- High waist jean shorts - Good will
- Opaque black tights - Urban Outfitters (I ripped them up during class…to add to the grunge look!)
- Pleather high top sneakers - A Korean site…gotta look for it. -_-
I’ve been wanting to do a grunge-esque look for a WHILE now. Ever since the belted sweater made a comeback, I thought “Why not just bring back FLANNEL?” I’ve always loved my plaid flannel; it’s a great accent piece and great for keeping you warm on a chilly day or in a chilly room. So when it isn’t so cool outside or in, I keep it tied around my waist to avoid the hassle of carrying it AND to make a fashion statement!
HOWEVER, what I’m most excited to share is my HAIR!
Part of the reason why I’d been waiting to reach for my grunge-esque outfit was that I knew I didn’t have the right hair. I needed something that was textured, but not messy; volumized, but tame. My hair, naturally, is too smooth for a grunge look. So when I found this Wavy Hair Tutorial from Threadsence, I was jumping at the chance to try it out. I did it exactly as they did it in the video, step by step. The only difference was I didn’t try the braids (which I will, later on (: ) and I added some volumizing mousse to my roots at the top of my head (that’s the area where I have the biggest issue with volume -__-). Here’s how it came out.
For make up, I went for a bold lip (Chili by MAC) and dark eyebrows. Then I just put on some black mascara. TIP: When wearing a bold lip, it’s better to go easy on the eyes - and vice versa!
I am so super happy with the hair and I hope you all try it out as well!
We wish the best for all of you and that you accomplish whatever resolutions you’ve made for yourself!
Here’s Karla at a New Year’s Ever party with her bold-colored outfit and friend, Danahlyn:
Black lace dress - Forever 21
Maroon frilled heels - Traffic (I think. lol)
Mustard knit sweater - Kenneth Cole
Wine pencil skirt - Forever 21
Semi-sheer patterned tights - Forever 21
Black platforms - Love Culture
My outfit was composed of things I had never worn before that night. I had no idea what to wear, so I figured a new outfit for a new year. Cheesy, I know. But I didn’t have anything sparkly to wear, so you have to go with what you have, RIGHT?! At least my top was a bold and bright color. (:
Happy belated Christmas! I’m sorry we’ve been slacking on the posts. I’m thinking we should start carrying a camera with us at all times. Then we can start posting quick, short posts here and there on where we are, what we’re doing, and/or what we’re wearing. Something is better than nothing, AMIRITE?! So stay tuned! …please. :D
THIS post, however, is on our lovely/beautiful/talented/amazing friend WEN-JU CHIEN! She recently graduated from FIU with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts. As sort of their final exam, her graduating class had a showcase in FIU’s Frost Art Museum.
Wen-Ju (in the black lace GUESS dress) and myself with friends at her showcase.
That large piece behind us was actually bought by the museum to be a part of their permanent collection. HERS WAS THE ONLY ONE (told you she’s amazing)!
Her work largely reflects events and people in her life; her characters, which look a lot like little monsters, are all designed to represent her friends in real life. The seemingly cluttered worlds which she creates in her pieces are all a collision of her memories, which in closer observation, all convey moments of joy, longing, fondness, and love. There is an honesty in her work that is greatly appreciated. It is no wonder why people love her art (and herself) so much! (:
Wen-Ju interned for the Miami-based art studio FriendsWithYou and was recently offered a job to work with them. She is definitely an up-and-coming artist to look out for! Below are some scans of her work:
Check out more of her work at her website - Wenart.com or follow her on Tumblr at nawiat !
Okay. I’ve been somewhat obsessed with one thing lately - TIGHTS!
Winter is on our heels and it’s actually getting cooler in Miami. It’s not EXTREMELY cold, in which case I’d be wearing both tights AND jeans, but it’s cold enough!
Since we never really have a particularly cold season (even now, it’s still warm when the sun is out) my wardrobe - and I’m sure many of yours, as well - consists of many shorts and short skirts. Wearing long jeans on a hot Miami day is no bueno.
As I mentioned before, there are days that can be incredibly windy and somewhat cool, but because the sun is out, it’s hot in the day and colder at night. Most of those times, I’m out the entire day. So I try to dress smart. I wouldn’t want to wear long jeans in the morning only to suffer until the night time.
And so! I found the alternative! The in-between, if you will. TIGHTS! A blessing for those confusing Winter days.
More reasons why they’re so great? They’re inexpensive and virtually indestructible. YES, INDESTRUCTIBLE. I bought two pairs for $10 about two/three years ago from Urban Outfitters… I still only use the one pair. Don’t worry! They’re clean! And because I have so many shorts and short skirts, the tights are a perfect addition for tying the whole outfit together!
This was on a trip to Gainesville, where it gets considerably colder than Miami. Hence the thick jacket and sweater. But THANK GOODNESS I decided to wear shorts because that sun was unforgiving. All I had to do was pop off that thick jacket and I was good to go… until night time. (:
Side note: I REALLY love those boots! They’re a hand-me-down from my mother and everyone asks me about them. :D
Just wanted to write a quick post for the upcoming season (incidentally, my FAVORITE season!). ALSO, feel free to ask us any questions!
Well you might be excited to hear - T-shirts are back in style!
T-shirts come with different necks and in many styles, which make them versatile and great to dress up or dress down. I have so many T-shirts back from when they used to be all I wore. Now, I mostly wear them when I’m feeling lazy. But that doesn’t mean feeling lazy should make you look lazy!
Here, I’ll be dressing a basic Crew Neck Tee (Cotton On) in two ways: a girly outfit and a boyish outfit. It’s been getting cooler in Miami (since it’s getting closer to Winter!), so I decided to add layers. I kept my hair (high top knot) and make up (MAC’s Chili in matte) the same for both, but changed my accessories, just to emphasize how the smallest detail can change the entire look!
The Girly Outfit
For the girly outfit, I paired the crew tee with a flowy, floral skirt (Cotton On), a blue button up (Goodwill), navy blue socks (Wal-mart), and high-heel boots (Forever 21). The glasses are a vintage pair of YSL from my mom, circa 1980. (:
The rings are from Forever 21 and the collar necklace also came from my mom (she’s the best!) :D
The Boyish Outift
To make it more “boyish”, I went for a vertical-striped blazer (Forever 21), black skinny jeans (Forever 21), and green suede high-tops (Korean from MIYUKI!). The sun glasses are a wayfarer-style that my pops bought for a $1 and just gave to me. Haha!
I accessorized with a “silver knuckle” ring (Forever 21) and the wooden “DOPENESS” necklace I bought from a Childish Gambino concert. Stylish, yet edgy. ;)
So when dressing a Tee, keep these tips in mind:
- DON’T just wear it with jeans/sweats!
- DON’T be afraid to wear it with a skirt!
- DO try tying it into knots!
- DO try cutting it up!
- DO go for different styles (bold colors, neutral colors, funky patterns, easy to layer)!
If you’ve lived in Miami for more than a year, you’d know that our weather usually sticks to one season. Chances are, if you visited Miami during the Winter season, it could still be considered a Summer vacation. Living in this city of endless sun can easily pose a challenge for someone who wants to follow the seasonal fashion trends.
Although it can be difficult, it’s not impossible!
We here at collectivExpressions came up with simple outfits that incorporate Fall fashion trends that won’t kill you in the heat!
Fall (normally) means its time to cover up for cooler weather and shawls are the perfect piece for keeping warm on a breezy day.
Here, Joanna covers up with an black shawl-type blouse (Cotton On) and keeps it cool with high-waisted jean shorts (Goodwill/DIY). She pairs in with black, studded wedges (Forever 21), then ties the look together with her tangled chain and accessories. A perfect way to keep cool while looking cool.
Prints, maxi skirts, and neutral colors have been this year’s Fall fashion trends.
Karla tries to incorporate these trends into one simple outfit. A printed sleeveless top (Cotton On) is paired with a maxi skirt with lace trim (a hand-me-down) and cinched at the waist with a thin brown belt (Cotton On). The shoes (Philippines) are a tan/beige color which give the outfit a nice contrast.
These are just our takes on some of the Fall trends we’ve noticed. Of course, if you live in a colder area where there are ACTUALLY seasons, you can always cover up. Try wearing longer pants with Joanna’s outfit or adding a cardigan to Karla’s! Possibilities are endless!
Yay, it’s our first blog post! Hope everyone is having a good week. We are two broke full-time college girls with no jobs looking to stay current and up-to-date with trends for the season. Being Miami natives, we haven’t seen many blogs based out here so thought we start the trend!
